Web 2.0 Definition - Under Construction
Roland pointed to the Web 2.0 Wikipedia entry a little while back and suggested some updates (which he hasn't applied yet...nudge, nudge). I went over and had a look and deleted some links to specific companies. Then Read/Write pointed to the evolving definition:
NB: it seems the techy Wikipedia definition of Web 2.0 is under debate. Boris Mann takes issue with the "implementation" section pointing to companies - he says "let's not have this page be a commercial advertisement, but rather an evolving definition of Web 2.0." Then Aaron Swartz weighs in by saying it's "a vague article promoting a bunch of the author's favorite technologies and psuedo-tech-blabber."
Both reasonable objections, although I'd like to see the author of the original definition respond. Also I'd like to see a more business-focused definition added, to complement the techy one. If I get any free time in the coming weeks (unlikely!) I may even pen it myself.
Read/Write Web: Web 2.0 from IA, Business and People perspectives
I haven't really done much editing in the Wikipedia before. I'm delighted by the process so far. Really! I point excitedly at the history page and whisper "Isn't this fun?!". Yes, this is the height of geek. Or maybe not...I love this sort of distributed/collaborative debate, which is really just an online version of people discussing ideas.
I also noticed that Travis Smith made an edit, relating the Semantic Web notion to Web 2.0. Us Vancouver folks are all over Web 2.0!
The discussion page is great, but having such a page as an RSS collector/aggregator would be even more super fantastic. You would reference an entry-specific something-or-other (OpenTopics related?) and your post would appear on that page. The Wikipedia would use existing techniques to weed out spamming in this area.
I think the team here will look at Roland's original list and go into our Thinking Room and do some white boarding. More edits soon...
